Veterans Day 11.11.07

HAPPY VETERANS DAY!

From one Veteran to all the rest of the Veterans, Happy Veterans Day. I salute you!
Actually, Veterans Day was originally Armistice Day when it was first created after the end of the First World War.

HISTORY

In November 1919, President Wilson proclaimed November 11 as the first commemoration of Armistice Day with the following words: "To us in America, the reflections of Armistice Day will be filled with solemn pride in the heroism of those
who died in the country’s service and with gratitude for the victory, both because of the thing from which it has freed us and because of the opportunity it has given America to show her sympathy with peace and justice in the councils of the nations…"

Now originally, November 11th was set aside of honor World War I Veterans.

...but in 1954, after World War II had required the greatest mobilization of soldiers, sailors, Marines and airmen in the Nation’s history; after American forces had fought aggression in Korea, the 83rd Congress, at the urging of the veterans service organizations, amended the Act of 1938 by striking out the word "Armistice" and inserting in its place the word "Veterans." With the approval of this legislation (Public Law 380) on June 1, 1954, November 11th became a day to honor American veterans of all wars.

President Dwight D. Eisenhower made it official that same year. It was now a day to honor ALL American Veterans.

TODAY

Since the creation of this holiday, much has happened. Since World War II, many more Americans stepped up when others would not, and proved the worth of this country. This includes those that served during the so-called "Cold War" including all of the conflicts that occurred during, after, up to the current War On Terror. A few things to think about:

>You praise and worship God? Thank a Veteran!
>You speak English? Thank a Veteran!
>You own your home? Thank a Veteran!
>Collect and or shoot guns? Thank a Veteran!
>You vote? Thank a Veteran!
>You blog your opinions? Thank a Veteran!
>You know your rights? Thank a Veteran!
>You generally choose your own wardrobe? Thank a Veteran!
>You think for yourself? Thank a Veteran!
>You choose to have more than one child? Thank a Veteran!
>You pointing out other things I have forgotten to list here? Thank a Veteran!

The bottom line: We owe much to our Veterans. Thank one or more on November 11th. Thank at least one every day. Pray for one.

Psalm 91

1 The one who lives under the protection of the Most High dwells in the shadow of the Almighty. 2 I will say to the Lord, “My refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust.” 3 He Himself will deliver you from the hunter’s net, from the destructive plague. 4 He will cover you with His feathers; you will take refuge under His wings. His faithfulness will be a protective shield.
5 You will not fear the terror of the night, the arrow that flies by day, 6 the plague that stalks in darkness, or the pestilence that ravages at noon.
7 Though a thousand fall at your side and ten thousand at your right hand, the pestilence will not reach you. 8 You will only see it with your eyes and witness the punishment of the wicked.
9 Because you have made the Lord—my refuge, the Most High—your dwelling place,10 no harm will come to you; no plague will come near your tent.
11 For He will give His angels orders concerning you, to protect you in all your ways.
12 They will support you with their hands so that you will not strike your foot against a stone. 13 You will tread on the lion and the cobra; you will trample the young lion and the serpent. 14 Because he is lovingly devoted to Me, I will deliver him; I will exalt him because he knows My name. 15 When he calls out to Me, I will answer him; I will be with him in trouble. I will rescue him and give him honor. 16 I will satisfy him with a long life and show him My salvation.

:::tears flow::: This, my dear man, is a very poignant tribute. The Psalm 91 made me cry! I love having you as a vet...you're so much appreciated by me and my family. It's just difficult to convey. And, I am sorry it's only one day out of the year that most pay tribute. It should be 365!!!!

A wonderful tribute, and the history lesson is also great for those who don't know the background. I hope you don't mind, I added your post to my blog as well.

Outstanding post and history lesson Robocop.

That Psalm 91 is special to me, had it printed on a business card like size and was in my left breast pocket during combat operations in Desert Storm.

I still have it, and I wore it out while I was theater over there reading it.

Thank you.

A wonderful post. It's Remembrance Day here in Canada...or version of Veterans day. We have much to be thankful for and we owe much to those who fought for our freedoms.

Thank you everyone. I also thank you for making a Veterans/Remembrance Day post on your own blogs. There is still hope for our countries.

Gunz:

Funny you should mention that. My first exposure to Psalm 91 was in Desert Shield/Desert Storm.

Thank you for your service.
I am so glad you said "Happy Veterans Day." It makes me feel so much better. I did my post on Sunday. In 2003 my Grandpa received his last set of orders for his final duty station. Once a Marine always a Marine. I miss that jarhead.
Thank you for the history behind Veterans day.
