Fun Monday 08.04.08

I am going to gamble an try to tackle this week's assignment. This week's Fun Monday is being hosted by Mothers Of Brothers.

The Rules:

Words are our building blocks, our stepping stones, and, for many of us, our salvation. We string them together so quickly at times, we often lose sight of how precious they are. So tell us about your favorite word… or if you can’t pick just one, tell us about a few. Are there certain words that feel good the way they roll of your tongue? Do some words make you feel smart? Or silly? Or happy? Which words do you find yourself selecting to put in your posts? Since this response could be a short one, feel free to poll your family and friends and include some of their favorite words as well. If you think a definition is required, please share one. Please keep the words rated G for all audiences. Any language is acceptable, but please provide a translation. And stick to real words as opposed to ones made up along the way. We then challenge everyone to visit the posts on Monday and try to use other bloggers’ favorite words in your blog next week. We can’t wait to expand our vocabulary!

So here it goes. The word for today is FAITH.

Starting out with a definition from the Free Online Dictionary:

faith-n-

1. Confident belief in the truth, value, or trustworthiness of a person, idea, or thing.
2. Belief that does not rest on logical proof or material evidence. See Synonyms at belief, trust.
3. Loyalty to a person or thing; allegiance: keeping faith with one's supporters.
4. often Faith Christianity The theological virtue defined as secure belief in God and a trusting acceptance of God's will.
5. The body of dogma of a religion: the Muslim faith.
6. A set of principles or beliefs.

What does this mean to Robocop?

To me, the word faith applies to many aspects of my life.

Personally- I have faith that I will always do my job well. I will always find a way to support my family. I have faith that things will always work out in the end. I have faith that I will not have another stroke.

Politically- I have faith that my country will not implode on itself. I have faith that the people will wake up, smell the coffee, and start ignoring the trash we call "the mainstream media." I have faith that we will not allow ourselves to be conquered, and that we will not lose sight of who we are in the name of political correctness.

Morally- I have faith that our society will not degenerate too much further. As a people, we are not the moral disgrace that is glorified in the media. We have problems, but our resistance to a further decline strengthens my faith.

Spiritually- I have faith that God makes all of this possible. I have to admit that in this department, my faith is strained.

To conclude this post, I'll post another definition of the word faith from an obscure and ancient text:

Now faith is the reality of what is hoped for, the proof of what is not seen.
Hebrews 11:1 HCSB

A thought-provoking post and favorite word. The text from Hebrews is sometimes translated, I think, as "the hope in the unseen." That is the title of a spectacular book by Ron Suskind that all 10th graders in our high school are required to read, about a kid with zero advantages who transcends his circumstances. I recommend it to all. Thank you for participating in FM with the MOB!

I'm trying to remember my husbands definition of Faith -- and it's not coming to me right now. I'll send it to you when we get home from work tonight.

Sometimes Faith is what gets me through the night. Lovely Post Robo

Dang it, I can't believe I didn't list this word in my post. Faith has gotten me through a lot in my life and it's definitely a favorite word of mine.

I agree with, "I have faith that our society will not degenerate too much further. As a people, we are not the moral disgrace that is glorified in the media. We have problems, but our resistance to a further decline strengthens my faith." I think that this partly because good people keep fighting the good fight...so to speak.

Oh my goodness Robocop...I loved this...loved it all!!! Your personal view of the word, for yourself, is outstanding. And then the political view for your word is strong and confident..."Politically- I have faith that my country will not implode on itself. I have faith that the people will wake up, smell the coffee, and start ignoring the trash we call "the mainstream media." I have faith that we will not allow ourselves to be conquered, and that we will not lose sight of who we are in the name of political correctness." All I can say is: "Right on!!!" You said it all!!!

Thanks for stopping by today. Hope your week is super.

[Oh and I came in the back way today from the link on the comment you left me...and I saw your avatar is animated! Well, duh. Way cool!!!]

I, too, love the world faith. I have greater faith in God than in the other things you list. But then my faith in Him tells me that the other things will be taken care of in His due time.

A beautifully written post. I could use more faith, especially lately as I've been worrying about pretty much everything on your list of what faith means to you....

You know, I was surprised to see this word? But it's so true and yes, I can see that you have faith in your posts.
